Additive manufacturing: what industrial 3D printing changes for your workshop
Additive manufacturing is no longer reserved for large groups. Prototypes, jigs, short runs: here is what it concretely brings to an industrial workshop.

The term has come up in every industrial conversation for a decade: additive manufacturing. Behind the phrase, a simple reality. A part is built layer by layer from a digital file, with no mould, no dedicated tooling, no stock to freeze. For a design office or a production workshop, that changes how you approach a prototype, a jig, or a spare part.
This article covers what additive manufacturing actually brings to an industrial business, and what it does not replace.
Additive manufacturing: what it actually means
Additive manufacturing covers every technology that builds a part by adding material, layer after layer, as opposed to machining, which removes material from a raw block. 3D printing is its best-known form. Two families dominate the industrial landscape accessible to workshops:
- Fused deposition modelling (FDM): a plastic filament is heated and deposited layer by layer. Fast, economical, suited to functional parts and a wide range of technical materials.
- Stereolithography / resin (SLA-MSLA): a liquid resin is cured by UV, layer by layer. Ideal for fine detail and tight tolerances on small parts.
Other processes exist — laser sintering (SLS), metal fusion (DMLS/SLM) — but they belong to a heavier industrial scale, with machines and investments few workshops own in-house. We come back to this below.
What additive manufacturing brings to an industrial workshop
Rapid prototyping
Before launching costly machining or a production run, you want to validate a geometry, an assembly, a functional clearance. Additive manufacturing produces that prototype in a few days, sometimes 48 hours. You iterate on the file, not the tooling. See our rapid prototyping page for the full process.
Jigs and workshop tooling
A drilling jig, a control fixture, a gripper for an assembly station: these are parts made in one or two units, never worth machining or moulding for. With additive manufacturing, they cost the price of the material and a few machine hours. It is often the first use case that convinces a workshop to make the switch.
Functional parts in short runs
A technical part for a specific machine, a housing, a motor mount, an interface part between two components: when volume does not justify an injection mould, 3D printing produces the run directly. Spare parts
An old machine, a part no longer listed in a manufacturer's catalogue, a discontinued component: from a drawing, a file, or a part to scan, we reproduce the missing element. No need to wait on a supplier or restart tooling for a single part.
Available technical materials
Industrial use demands materials that hold up to stress, temperature, or friction. Beyond standard PLA, we work with technical filaments on order:
- ABS and ASA: mechanical strength and UV resistance for ASA, suited to outdoor parts or enclosures.
- TPU 95A: flexible, for seals, protective covers, damping parts.
- PAHT-CF (carbon-fibre reinforced nylon): high rigidity and mechanical strength, for structural parts or heavily used tooling.
- PLA-CF: reinforced rigidity for jigs and prototypes that need to stay dimensionally stable.
Material choice depends on the actual use of the part — mechanical stress, thermal exposure, food contact or not. Our materials page details each option, and we guide you before printing.
The limits, stated plainly
Honest additive manufacturing starts with saying what it does not do. Our FDM fleet runs on one machine, with a print volume of around 25 cm per part. A larger part is produced as several assembled modules, or outsourced to a partner equipped for large format.
We do not do laser sintering (SLS) or metal fusion in-house. For a project that requires it — support-free sintered nylon, an aluminium or steel part — we point you to a specialised partner, with full transparency on lead time and cost.
Finally, we remain a workshop, not a factory. Our position is clear: prototypes, single parts, short and mid-size runs. Not mass production in the tens of thousands.
How we work with an industrial project
The starting point is almost always a CAD file, a technical drawing, or an existing part to reproduce. If you have neither, our CAD design service models the part from your functional requirements.
We then review the geometry: print orientation, wall thickness, tolerances, material choice for the intended use. A detailed quote follows, with lead time and per-part cost. What is the difference between 3D printing and additive manufacturing?
None in substance. Additive manufacturing is the technical, industrial term; 3D printing is its common name. Both describe building a part layer by layer from a digital file.
Can you produce metal parts?
Not in-house. We work with technical plastics (FDM and resin). For a metal part, we point you to a specialised partner and stay involved in following the project.
At what quantity does 3D printing become cost-effective for short runs?
