Filament ABS : guide complet
ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) is the historical plastic of Lego bricks and electronics shells: tough, heat-resistant to 95 °C, machinable and paintable. In 3D printing, still relevant for heated technical parts — but PETG has replaced it in 90% of consumer cases.

Pour quels projets choisir le ABS ?
ABS remains unbeatable when a part sees sustained heat over 80 °C: motor cover, radiator-area support, 3D printer enclosure parts. Glass transition (~105 °C) clearly separates it from PETG (75 °C).
Finish-wise, ABS sands, paints, and smooths with acetone vapors — the only FDM filament for an injection-molded-like finish without serious work. Great for cosplay and painted props.
Also tough at low temps (-20 °C) — gears, hinges, snap boxes that need impact resistance without becoming brittle in cold.
Limites du ABS
ABS releases styrene during printing — volatile and noxious in prolonged exposure. Requires enclosure + ventilation, ideally HEPA filter. Not for office or poorly aired workshop.
Warps a lot. Without 100-110 °C heated bed, enclosure, and proper adhesion, corners lift. Not beginner-friendly.
Standard ABS yellows quickly under UV. Outdoors: switch to ASA.

Questions fréquentes sur le ABS
PETG in 90% of cases: similar mechanical strength, no fumes or warping, better UV resistance. ABS only if part exceeds 80 °C in service or you want acetone-smoothing.
