Filament PLA : guide complet

PLA (polylactic acid) is the most-used 3D printing material in the world: easy to print, cheap, plant-based, ideal for aesthetic parts and visual prototypes.

Pour quels projets choisir le PLA ?

PLA is the default for any static piece: mockup, visual prototype, indoor decor, gadget, large figurine. It prints on nearly any FDM machine without enclosure or special adhesive, with excellent surface quality out of the box.

Aesthetically it accepts almost every composite filament (glitter, wood, marble, silk) — endless rendering options. Plant-based origin (corn starch) also makes it a reasonable pick for eco-conscious briefs.

For occasional-contact food parts (chocolate mold, cookie cutter, dry candy dispenser), standard PLA works — prefer food-safe certified PLA for frequent contact.

Limites du PLA

PLA softens at 55-60 °C: not for car parts in the sun, items stored near a south-facing window, or hot-water exposure. Its main limitation.

It's brittle: a lateral shock can break it cleanly. For parts that take dynamic stress (clip, hinge, fastener under tension), switch to PETG or Nylon.

Under UV, it yellows and becomes brittle within months. Outdoor exposure requires ASA or PETG.

Questions fréquentes sur le PLA

  • PLA is compostable in industrial composting (60 °C + controlled humidity), but not in a home compost where it degrades over years. Not zero-impact, but one of the least polluting to produce.
